KMTA's SnowSchool connects students throughout Southcentral Alaska to the wild and wonderful world of snow! Winter in Alaska provides some of the best learning and recreation opportunities of the year and our program encourages meaningful connections and healthy behaviors that last a lifetime. Students strap on snowshoes and set out for a day of scientific exploration and outdoor adventure that emphasizes teachable moments and hands-on exploration of the snowpack and winterized watersheds.

1. Provide students with knowledge of basic snow science and hydrology using an experiential, inquiry-based teaching model.

2. Expose students to the winter environments and recreation opportunities in the KMTA NHA.

3. Provide opportunities to practice their science, social, and outdoor skills.

4. Model and cultivate stewardship behaviors and an appreciation for the natural world.

ELIGIBILITY & COST

KMTA’s SnowSchool is available as a day program for classes K-12. Program start and end times can be flexible to account for bus availability and travel distance. Additional school-based programming is available to schools located within the Heritage Area by request. KMTA is committed to working with students, teachers, schools, and parents to ensure cost is never a barrier to program participation. Our fee structure is as follows:

• Non-title I schools: $30 per student
• Title I schools: Free

We realize that Title I status is not always the most accurate indication of need. If you are a non-Title I school interested in subsidized program fees please provide a brief statement of need on your program application. If you are a Title I school with the resources to fund your students’ participation, please consider waiving your subsidized rate so that we can support additional student participation in the program.
