about

As Alaska’s only NHA, our mission is to preserve the historic, natural, and cultural resources of the KMTA region, and to facilitate public enjoyment of all it has to offer. Above all, we seek to foster pride of place and an enduring stewardship ethic.

In 2009, Congress designated the Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm (KMTA) region of Southcentral Alaska as a National Heritage Area (NHA). This designation formally recognizes the compelling history, culture, and landscape of an area that has deeply shaped the legacy of Alaska and the nation.

We nurture learning through our outdoor education programs, transportation equity initiative, and free curricular resources.

We award annual grants to mission-aligned
community projects.

We host events that bring people together and celebrate KMTA’s vibrant history, character, and communities.

A donation to KMTA could help expand equitable access to outdoor learning opportunities for Alaskan youth, or fund a community trail project. It could help restore natural habitat, foster inclusive outdoor recreation, or even support the preservation of a historical building. No matter who you are, where you live, or what you can contribute, when you give a gift to KMTA, you help us preserve this remarkable place for all and become a part of our living heritage.
